Gallbladder removal, or cholecystectomy, is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. Dr. Pravin Goykar performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy — a minimally invasive technique that removes the gallbladder through small keyhole incisions, offering patients a safer, faster and more comfortable recovery compared with open surgery.
The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile produced by the liver. While the gallbladder plays a role in digestion, it is not an essential organ, and patients can live normally and comfortably after its removal.
Surgery is typically recommended when the gallbladder develops problems that cause symptoms or complications. Common indications include:
During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, three to four small incisions are made in the abdomen. A camera (laparoscope) and surgical instruments are introduced through these incisions, and the gallbladder is carefully detached from the liver and bile duct before being removed through one of the incisions. The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia.
Minimal Scarring
Small incisions leave significantly less visible scarring compared with open surgery.
Reduced Post-Operative Pain
Most patients experience less discomfort after laparoscopic surgery.
Shorter Hospital Stay
Many patients are discharged within 24 hours of the procedure.
Faster Return to Normal Activities
Recovery is typically quicker than with open cholecystectomy.
Lower Infection Risk
Smaller incisions reduce the risk of wound infection.
Patients are advised on dietary modifications following surgery, particularly in the initial weeks. Most patients can return to a normal diet gradually after recovery. Post-operative follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and address any concerns.
